On 3rd July 1999 Billy Mitchell became the first and, so far, only person ever to play a perfect game of Pacman. The so-called ‘Holy Grail’ game is achieved by getting the maximum possible score on all 256 levels. In no less than 6 hours Billy clocked up a maximum 3, 333, 360 on just a single quarter. Needless to say, he’s pretty chuffed with himself… and people say videogames are a waste of time.
His achievement and subsequent rivalry with other gamers is the subject of the doc The King of Kong: A Fistful of Quarters. I’d be surprised if these were released over here, but it looks like it might be one of those things that’s worth ordering from the US.
It’s hard to know what to like most about this clip. It’s just great to see a charming, confident young man, who knows where his talents lie, excelling at what he does best.
I think my favourite moment from this purveyor of Bacchinalean delights is at the VERY end. It’s worth holding on ’til then in order to witness this Dionysus of the middle class Autralian suburbs coming out with one of the best lines you’ll ever hear.
I like the idea of being able to petition the government to do something, but opening up e-petitions to the general public on the Prime Minister’s website is just asking for trouble. I wonder if anyone with any sort of power actually reads these? Judging by the nonsense that’s on there, I doubt anyone with any power ever has, or ever will, take these seriously. If you know of a Government that has done something because of an Online Petition I’d love to hear about it, but I doubt they’re worth the paper they’re not printed on. God bless the folks who get creative: some of my faves include.
We the undersigned petition the Prime Minister to…
This Gondry video for Lucas With The Lid Off has to be one my all time faves. I’ve never been able to quite figure out if it’s one continuous shot or if there are cuts involved but either way it makes for an impressive backdrop to what is also a cracking good tune.
I’ve never been totally comfortable with ‘musical’ comedy. However, in recent times my views have been altered by the likes of David O’Doherty and Flight of the Conchords, and also the genius of Demetri Martin.
Get a nice cup of tea and enjoy 14 minutes of top quality gags from the latter….I guarantee it will make you feel better about being back in work
